Okanagan Bus Tour

Saturday, September 12  and Sunday, September 13, 2009

This will be our 4th annual bus tour!  We're taking a fun group of 24 people on an interesting and tasty tour of the best that the South Okanagan has to offer.  We'll be eating at great restaurants, and tasting wines all over the Oliver/Osoyoos area.

Hurry and reserve your seat(s) now! This year we're focusing on the Black Sage Bench and Golden Mile areas.  Highlights will include lunches at Burrowing Owl Winery and Quinta Ferriera Winery, and a fabulous private tour, tasting, and dinner at the stunning Nk'Mip Winery.

Our muster point will be at the Cactus Tree Inn, Oliver.  Rooms are tentatively booked at the Cactus Tree Inn until August 15.  Rooms are $79/single, $89/double.  Some have kitchenettes. An outdoor barbecue and a pool are available.

E-mail info@cactustreeinn.com or phone 1-250-498-2225 to make your reservations.  Please note that we are not including accommodation in the price this year, as there are so many people who perfer to make alternative arrangements.  Members are responsible for booking their own accommodations.  As always, we suggest that you stay the Sunday night as well rather than making the drive back to Vancouver after a day of wine tasting.

Big Reds

BCWAS 2009 Big Reds

Who says BC can’t make good red wines? We challenge any naysayers to attend our Big Reds event on Wednesday October 21, and find out for yourselves what world-class red wines we make here in BC. Prepare to be proved wrong!

For all you fans of BC wines, here is another wonderful opportunity to taste some of the best, many of which are still available. Of the ones that aren’t, new vintages will be out this year! Make a list of your favourites, and get yourselves on the wineries’ mailing lists so you don’t miss out. There are almost 200 wineries in BC now – how many have you been to?

As a special treat this year, John Schreiner, author of The Wineries of British Columbia, will be our guest speaker. John started out writing about business for the Financial Post, but switched his focus to wine. His first wine book was in 1984, and he’s written several more since then. As well as writing about wine, John has served as a judge on international tasting panels, and is chair of the Selection Committee for the Playhouse International Wine Festival. John will also have copies of his latest book for sale, or if you already have one, bring it in and get it autographed!

Check out this stellar lineup:

2003 Sandhill Two, Small Lots Program
2004 Sumac Ridge Black Sage Vineyard Meritage
2005 Laughing Stock Portfolio

Christmas with Wild Goose

Started in Okanagan Falls as a “retirement project” in 1983 by the Kruger family, Wild Goose Vineyards is one of the oldest – and most-awarded – wineries in the Okanagan.

Wild Goose was voted 2009 Winery of the Year by Wine Press Northwest, out of a field of over 1400 wineries – truly an honour. Other recent awards include: the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in British Columbia Wines for the 2008 Pinot Gris, the only "Winery of Distinction" award from the Northwest Wine Summit wine competition held in Oregon, three golds from the Okanagan Wine Festival competition for their Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Autumn Gold – and that’s just this year!

This December 3rd, Roland Kruger will be visiting the BCWAS for our annual Holiday Event. This will be a fun, friendly, walk-about event, where you will have the chance to visit with your fellow BC wine lovers, taste some great wine, enjoy some yummy food, and get a chance to talk to Roland. The chefs at the Listel are providing a great selection of appies for us. Wines poured will include:

2008 Pinot Gris
2008 Gewurztraminer
2008 Riesling
2008 Autumn Gold
2008 Mystic River Pinot Gris
2008 Mystic River Gewurztraminer
2008 Mystic River Pinot Blanc
2007 Pinot Noir
2007 Merlot
2008 Black Brant

And … we’ve managed to make this event cheaper than last year!
